Nitrogen fertilization
Calcium fertilization
Magnesium
Nitrogen fertilization takes place in 2-3 doses after the start of vegetation, shortly before flowering until the middle/end of June. The trees absorb the nitrogen predominantly in nitrate form. Nitrogen in the form of nitrate (anion) can promote the uptake of cations such as calcium (Ca++), magnesium (Mg++) and potassium (K+). N-doses can be applied specifically to the tree strips and only occasionally in the tramlines. Green tree strips reduce the risk of nutrient leaching. When using the tree strip, it should be noted that the N fertilizer should not be concentrated more than doubly; with P, K and Mg, the whole amount can be concentrated on the strip. N fertilization can be done very well in liquid form (herbicide joist or via irrigation) In new plants, fertilization is carried out corresponding to the tree structure. Applications between the half and the whole amount in plants that are in production are placed during the development phase up to the 4th year after planting.
In the case of stone fruit, fruits sufficiently supplied with Ca remain stable in the store and especially in shelf-life (after storage), since calcium is important for cell wall strength. For cherries, Ca applications can reduce the bursting of fruit. For reasons of better tolerance, the highest dosages should not necessarily be used with stone fruit, but two to three applications to the juvenile fruits are definitely recommended in addition to the basic fertilizer.
Depending on the growth and yield, the annual extraction of cherry trees amounts to approx. 30kg MgO/ha. The leaves take up the major part of the extraction, but remain largely in the nutrient cycle. A favourable form of magnesium soil fertilization consists in the use of Mg-containing limestone in the course of a preservation liming. Cherries and especially sweet cherries are classified as highly sensitive to chloride, and fertilization is best achieved with potash-emphasized NPK fertilizers based on potassium sulphate.
